Your professional brand is your way of marketing yourself. Your whole career and online presence can act as an advert for who you are, what you’ve done and what you want to achieve. This can help you to run a successful business, become a freelancer or simply land your next exciting job. Therefore, a strong professional brand is important.
How do our personal brand and professional brand compare?
Your professional brand is not to be confused with your personal brand, though there is a bit of crossover between the two. Your personal brand is your true identity, your authentic self – who you are, what you want from life and what you represent. And often your career will play a part this, as you may have set yourself goals or place great importance on certain aspects of your working life. But your personal brand is not defined by your career in the same way your professional brand is, it is simply just a part of it.
How can you create a strong professional brand?
So to help you get a better understanding of professional branding and how you can boost yours, here’s five easy tips to create a great professional brand.
Start by doing an internet search of your name to see what comes up. This will give you a better idea of what potential employers, clients etc. might find about you online. You might want to do a digital clean up, perhaps deleting old social media profiles, pictures or blogs you no longer use. Whatever it is, make sure your digital footprint doesn’t compromise your professional brand.
Keep your private life, private
On a similar note, be sure to keep your private accounts – well, private! You might wish to set up a Facebook or Twitter profile for your business or a LinkedIn profile for work, but this should not be confused with your personal profiles. If you’ve got content that you might not want everyone to see, make sure you set your accounts to private.
Use a professional picture
It is so important to have professional pictures of yourself – so I recommend having a professional photo shoot done, it’s always worth the investment in yourself and the pics can be useful for your Personal Brand as well. These can then be used for all your professional profiles. It is also helpful to use the same photograph as this then becomes a recognisable part of your brand.
Build a strong website
If you’re selling your services, you need a great website to help you do this. You need somewhere to send potential employers or clients to see who you are and what you can do for them. Alternatively, if you’re selling a product a strong ‘About Me’ page on your website can work just as well. This is an integral part of building your professional brand.
Get your name out there
It’s vital that you shout about your professional brand and get your name out there. The more noise you make, the more recognisable you become. Create content such as blog posts and articles to position yourself as an expert in your field. Set up social accounts and share helpful content. Hire professionals for a branded social media campaign. Connect with like-minded professionals in your field. All of this will help you build your professional brand and get your name in front of the right people.
